If there is any “given” in life, it’s that things change. That’s what’s happened with the new Level 1 Partnership Program developed by Parelli Natural Horsemanship. It’s evolved from good to “five-star excellent.” “Our former Partnership Program was certainly good,” says world renown natural horseman Pat Parelli, “but over the five years since its initial launch, we’ve learned from thousands of people who have gone through the program about what we did well and what we didn’t do well. This new Level 1 has filled in all those gaps. People will be astounded by how quickly their horsemanship skills will excel with this new format.“ Pat and Linda Parelli have also recognized what people needed above and beyond what was in the first Level 1. “The video tape showed me demonstrating with a finished horse,” says Pat, “and what people needed was to see what to do when they encountered problems or challenges. So we changed that, and so much more. The new Level 1 information leaves no doubts or questions in anyone’s mind.” “We are in the business of teaching people to teach horses,” adds Linda Parelli. “But we needed to expand our knowledge of how people learn. That’s why we sought the advice of Dr. Stephanie Burns, an innovator in the field of adult learning and learning behavior.” “One of my roles in the development of this educational material,” comments Dr. Burns, “is to prepare the student to be the most efficient and effective learner possible. That includes overcoming fear, avoiding frustration, and encouraging questions.” Linda says of Dr. Burns, “Her input in the development of this new Level 1 program has taken it ‘over the top.’” Over the top indeed. The new Level 1 is abundant with educational material in the form of six DVDs with 14-1/2 hours of presentations, seven Pocketguides (averaging 45 pages each), a log book, audio CD, Theory Guide, Success Map, and a Level 2 Preparation Guide. The presentation is a “connect-the-dots” adventure, leading the student from written material to certain DVDs so the student can visualize the written lesson. And it’s not just watching polished professionals — much of the DVD viewing includes five days of a Level 1 class of people just beginning their Parelli journey. “It was a great adventure to be able to help people with their learning, motivation, and achievements,” comments Dr. Burns. “This program helps students overcome their inability or lack of willingness to take action, and understanding how fear interferes with action. I have found this program to help otherwise successful adults who fail to sustain momentum when it comes to their horsemanship goals.” But what exactly is this program? According to Pat Parelli, “It’s about how to understand your horse better so you can have a partnership that develops into a life-long relationship. Level 1 is about safety, confidence and respect, and how to achieve this through love, language and leadership.” Okay. How do we get there? By building a foundation with Level 1: Understanding equine psychology, developing curiosity, horsemanship tools, using your body for communication, the language of the Seven Games (and putting them to purpose), basics like haltering with savvy and learning to lead, having your horse “catch” you, leadership, assessing your ground skills, saddling, lateral flexion, mounting, dismounting, riding tips, go and whoa (fundamentals of impulsion), preparation for freestyle riding — to name the basics. Everything we do with horses relates to Level 1, this foundation program. No matter what breed, discipline or level of horsemanship you’re involved with, it all comes back to these cornerstones of learning, behavior and skills. And now the Parelli Natural Horsemanship Level 1 Partnership is better than ever. It’s an at-home study program unsurpassed in the horse industry.
