Understanding Horse Behavior

The most basic thing you need to know about horses is that they are prey animals. As a result, fear for his life is your horse’s basic operating system; and safety is his primary concern. Everything spells danger to a horse: sudden movements, a plastic bag flapping in a breeze, loud noises, confined spaces, unfamiliar equipment or surroundings, etc. So how do you turn a scared and skittish animal into a horse that is “calm, smart and brave?”  By establishing a relationship of trust and safety. And how do you do that?  By learning to see the world from your horse’s point of view.

Leadership

Horses are not only prey animals, they are also herd animals. They like strong, clear leadership and knowing who to follow. If you assume leadership in a trustworthy way, the horse will want to follow you and do as you ask.
